Report
A great day out of golf with only some rain on the last 2-3 holes (refreshing!).
Sapiently co-organized with George (our host) and Horst (who then fled to Turkey!) at the Shirehampton Golf Club, the famous course the Romans were amongst the first members of.
They used to arrive by the sea at Portus Abonae (Sea Mills) and used to play a few rounds getting to relax before leaving to Aquae Sulis (Bath).
Emperor Claudius in AD43, after having a bad round, was reported saying "F****** Hell!, It is a technical and tough (hilly) course!" "But I like it a lot!" (Dura Lex Sed Lex).
The Shirehampton Shark, George, attracted his victims inside his hunting territory and mercilessly executed all of them!
The last one to succumb was Tony, our legend of Long Ashton GC.
Claudius (an excellent golfer they say, like Kim Jong Un's Dad who scored 11 holes-in-one in the same round, his first round actually) was right.
It is a tough course because the 32 pts score has been so far the lowest score for a Winner.
Hole 11 (named "Portway" appropriately) oriented towards China (East), parallel to the river Avon, saw the bomb of our Southgate triumphing for the longest drive competition,
opps "The Leon Perkins Award" I should better say. Bravo Stuart, at last you got this one after losing for few centimeters to Andy in the 8th edition.
The nasty hole 18 ("Club House", narrow, protected by bunkers and snipers aiming from the club-house) was even nastier under the rain and no one could find the right lane to reach the green, but Jon found at least the lane leading to his prize for "Nearest to the...green". Nomen omen!
Malcolm won the Special Pasta Trophy again, second time in a row!
It was a great day and we have decided to play here again next year, the "Shirehampton April Classic" is born.
